Half of Canadians Support Trans Mountain Expansion

1 in 3 Strongly Support Expansion

Toronto, July 5th - In a random sampling of public opinion taken by The Forum Poll™ among 1812 Canadians 18 years of age or older, over half (TOP2: 54%) support the expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline, with a third (35%) saying they support it strongly.

A third (BTM2: 35%) oppose the expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline, with a quarter (23%) saying they oppose it strongly.

1 in 10 (10%) did not know.

Support for Expansion primarily in the Prairies, least in Quebec

Those who are most likely to support the pipeline are between the ages of 45-54 (61%), 55-64 (62%), or 65+ (62%), males (65%), the most wealthy (64%), completed college or university (58%), and living in Alberta (82%).

Those most likely to oppose the pipeline are between the ages of 18 to 34 (44%), female (41%), the least wealthy (41%), have some college or university education (38%) or a post-graduate degree (36%), or live in Québec (50%).

“Unsurprisingly, the greatest support for the Trans Mountain Pipeline is in Alberta,” said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne Bozinoff. “If the Canadian oil industry continues to slow down, the expansion project will become more and more important to election prospects in Western Canada.”
