Should Continue To Maintain ‘Toronto’ Sign
Enthusiasm highest in downtown, among the wealthiest
In a random sampling
of public opinion taken by the Forum Poll™ among 868 Toronto voters, one half
agree the city should continue to maintain the illuminated Toronto sign at
Nathan Phillips Square for another two years at a cost of about $500,000 (49%).
Just 4-in-10 disagree (39%), and one tenth have no opinion on the matter (11%).
Agreement is common
to the oldest (53%), the wealthiest ($100K to $250K - 58%), in the downtown
(57%), among those who are pedestrian commuters (63%), John Tory voters from
the last election (60%) but not so much Doug Ford voters (34%).
“It is remarkable
that an issue as simple and as uncontroversial as the wildly popular Toronto
sign could still stir political rivalries, which are evident in these findings.
Nonetheless, Toronto loves its sign, and woe betide the politician who tries to
