Split
opinion on Wynne campaigning for Trudeau
No agreement if it’s appropriate or helped
TORONTO November
5th, 2015 – In a random
sampling of public opinion taken by the Forum Poll™ among 1158 Ontario voters,
exactly equal proportions, just less than half approve (44%) or disapprove
(45%) of the energetic campaigning Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne did for
Liberal Leader and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau . Just one tenth don’t take a
position (11%). It is not surprising that three quarters of Liberal voters
approve of this (78%), but close to one half of NDP voters (45%) and even a
tenth of Progressive Conservative voters (13%) also approve. By federal
affiliation, results are very similar (Liberals - 69%, NDP - 46%, Conservatives
- 16%). Approval is also high among the youngest (50%), females (51%), mothers
(54%) and in the 416 Toronto area code (50%).
Most think Premiers shouldn’t be involved in Federal politics
Close
to one half agree that Premiers should not involve themselves in federal
campaigns (49%), while 4-in-10 are comfortable with this (40%). The youngest
believe this the most strongly (50%), as do, predictably, Liberals (63%).
Even split on whether Wynne helped Trudeau
There
is an even split in opinion among about a third each, on whether the Premier’s
campaigning helped Justin Trudeau (34%) or did not (32%). Just fewer say the
Premier neither helped nor hindered Trudeau (25%) and a tenth don’t know (10%).
Belief the Premier helped the new Prime Minister is most common to the oldest
(42%), mid-income groups ($40K to $60K - 40%), among PC voters (41%) but not so
much among Liberals (36%) or, especially, the NDP (24%), among the least educated
(40%) and among federal Conservatives (45%).
“While there is no agreement on whether it was a good idea or
not or even whether it helped Justin Trudeau, it appears
that those who think it was good are Liberal supporters, while those who think
it worked are not," said Forum Research President,
