Majority
continue to oppose public funding for Catholic schools
Levels steady since last summer
TORONTO March 1st
- In a random sampling of public opinion taken by the Forum Poll™ among
1148 Ontario voters, more than half disagreed that Catholic schools should
continue to receive public funding (52%), while fewer than 4-in10 agreed they
should continue to be funded (38%). One tenth do not have an opinion. These
results are almost identical to those noted last summer (July, 2015, disagree -
51%, agree - 38%, don’t know - 11%).
Those who agree with public funding for
Catholic schools tend to be mid aged (45 to 64 - 41%), mid income groups ($60K
to $80K - 46%), in eastern Ontario (47%) and among the less well-eductaed (some
college or university or less - 41%).
“Disagreement with Catholic school funding has been
remarkably stable since we first started tracking it four
years ago. It’s one of those issues that bubbles beneath the surface of Ontario
public life, but never really goes away," said
