high; satisfaction with Mississauga higher
TORONTO April 18th, 2016 - In a random sampling of public opinion taken by the Forum Poll™
among 1548 voters in Peel region, one half of Mississauga residents approve of
the plan to split from Peel (52%), while one quarter disagree (25%) and one
quarter has no opinion (23%). Among residents of Peel Region in total, just one
third approve of Mississauga going its own way (32%), while one half disapprove
(50%) and one fifth don’t know (19%). There is little enthusiasm for Brampton
to separate from the Region, neither among Peel residents in total (23%) nor
among Brampton residents (32%).
Among Mississaugans, interest in seceding is highest among males
(58%) rather than females (47%), mid income groups ($40K to $60K - 61%), the
best educated (post grad - 63%), and among those who voted PC in the last
provincial election (58%), rather than those who voted NDP (37%).

Among Peel
residents in total, three quarters are satisfied with the services they receive
from the Region (73%), and about one quarter are “very satisfied” (23%). One
half are “somewhat satisfied” (48%). These levels of satisfaction are shared by
residents of Mississauga as well (satisfied - 74%), “very satisfied” - 26%,
“somewhat satisfied” - 47%).

Residents of
Mississauga give their city even higher ratings for satisfaction with services
than they do the Region (satisfied - 80%, “very satisfied” - 37%, “somewhat
satisfied” - 44%). Residents of Brampton are slightly less satisfied with the
services they receive from their city than they are with those from the Region
(satisfied - 70%, “very satisfied” - 20%, “somewhat satisfied” - 50%).
Satisfaction with services received from the Town of Caledon is high as well
(satisfied - 77%, “very satisfied” - 35%, "somewhat satisfied” - 44%).
One half approve of
Mayor Jeffrey in Brampton, more approve of Mayor Crombie in Mississauga
One half of
Brampton voters approve of the job Linda Jeffrey is doing as mayor (54%), and
her approval is especially characteristic of mid aged groups (45 to 64 - 57%),
the wealthy ($80K to $100K - 60%) and the best educated (post grad - 57%).
In Mississauga, meanwhile, three quarters of voters approve of Bonnie Crombie
as mayor (72%), and this is especially the case among the oldest (76%), females
(76%) and mid income groups ($40K to $60K - 80%).
“It appears, while
the majority of Mississauga voters would like to leave the Regional
Municipality, the residents of Peel are not so eager to see them go. Brampton
appears to be happy as it is, even though residents are less satisfied with
their city services than are their neighbours in Mississauga," said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne
