4-in-10 want to see SRT turned into a park

Interest high among provincial NDP voters

TORONTO, March 15th, 2015 - In a random sampling of public opinion taken by the Forum Poll™ among 520 Toronto voters, 4-in-10 would like to see the aging Scarborough Rapid Transit line turned into an elevated urban park (like New York City’s High Line Park - 39%), while one quarter do not approve of this idea (25%). Fully one third have no opinion (36%).

Provincial NDP voters most enthusiastic

Interest in this idea is highest among provincial NDP supporters (50%), and also among those in mid to higher income groups ($ 60K to $80K - 49%), in East York (46% - caution: small base size). In Scarborough itself, interest is the same as in the general population (41%).

"It is curious to see enthusiasm for taking a transit mode out of operation just when the city need transit so urgently, but it should be noted enthusiasm is highest among those with an ideological bent, rather than those who live and work near the SRT," said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne Bozinoff.
