Half Disapprove Of Safe Injection Site In Mississauga
Approval highest among youngest, least wealthy
OTTAWA, May, 24th, 2016 – In a random sampling of public opinion taken by the Forum Poll™
among 722 Mississauga voters, just one third approve the idea of a safe
injection site for intravenous drug users in the city (35%), whereas one half
disapprove of the idea (48%). As many as a fifth have no opinion (17%).
Approval is common to the youngest (43%), the least wealthy (48% - often a
proxy for youth), among renters (44%) and among marijuana users (50%).
In comparison, in
Toronto this year, more than half favoured a safe injection site downtown
(March 23 - 55%) as did more than half in Ottawa (May 19 - 54%).
“Although
Mississauga appears to be less welcoming of the harm reduction approach to
intravenous drug use, it may be that city's opioid problem is more about oral
agents like Fentanyl than injectable drugs like Heroin” said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne Bozinoff.
