Foreign Buyers Tax on Real Estate in GTA Supported

Toronto, April 3rd – In a random sampling of public opinion taken by The Forum Poll™ among 884 Ontario voters, almost two-thirds (62%) of respondents say they would support a foreign buyer’s tax on real estate in the GTA. (20%) would oppose the imposition of a tax on foreign buyers, with (19%) saying they do not know.

Respondents most likely to support a foreign buyer’s tax include those aged 35-44 (64%) or 45-54 (65%), earning $40,000-$60,000 (70%) or $60,000-$80,000 (71%), living in the 905 (68%) or Toronto (65%), with some college or university (62%), a college or university degree (65%), or a post-graduate degree (65%), and supporting the Green (64%), PC (63%), NDP (62%) parties.

Respondents most likely to oppose a foreign buyer’s tax include the least wealthy (29%), living in Northeastern Ontario (29%), and the least educated (29%). 

“Support for a foreign buyer’s tax in the GTA is broad and spans many different demographic categories. It’s clear many are feeling the heat of the red-hot GTA housing market and are looking for any kind of relief,” said Dr. Lorne Bozinoff, President of Forum Research.
