Majority Approve of Rent Control Expansion

Almost half approve of a standard lease

Toronto, May 12th – In a random sampling of public opinion taken by The Forum Poll™ among 1103 Ontario voters, the majority (53%) approve of the expansion of rent control to all private rental units in Ontario. Only a quarter (25%) disapprove of the move, with just over 2-in-10 (22%) saying they do not know.


Respondents most likely to approve of the expansion of rent control include those aged 34 and younger (57%) and 35-44 (60%), females (58%), the least wealthy (59%) and those earning $80,000-$100,000 (60%), living in Toronto (62%), with a post-graduate degree (59%), and supporting the Liberals (69%) or Green Party (68%).

Respondents most likely to disapprove of the expansion of rent control include those aged 45-54 (36%), males (33%), the most wealthy (41%), living in North-Eastern Ontario (27%) or the 905 (26%), and supporting the Progressive Conservatives (41%).

Nearly 5-in-10 support standard lease

Almost half of respondents (47%) approve of the introduction of a standard lease for rental housing in Ontario. Just over 2-in-10 (21%) disapprove of a standard lease, with a third (32%) saying they do not know.

Respondents most likely to approve of a standard lease include those aged 34 and younger (48%), 35-44 (50%), or 55-64 (49%), earning $80,000-$100,000 (56%), living in Toronto (59%), with a post-graduate degree (52%), and supporting the Green Party (64%).

Respondents most likely to disapprove of a standard lease include those aged 45-54 (26%), males (25%), the most wealthy (27%), living in Northeastern Ontario (29%), and supporting the Progressive Conservatives (29%).

“Given the rapid rise of housing costs across Ontario, it’s no surprise the majority supports an expansion to rent control. Voters, particularly in Toronto, are eager for a release from the housing burden that’s only been increasing over the past few years,” said Dr. Lorne Bozinoff, President of Forum Research.
