More than Two-Thirds
Oppose Government Loans to Private Companies
Toronto, March 9th
– In a random sampling of public opinion taken by The Forum Poll™ among 1,340
Canadian voters, (68%) oppose the Federal Government offering interest free
loans to private, for-profit corporations. Only (14%) approve of this practice,
while (18%) don’t know.
Respondents most
likely to oppose these types of loans include those earning $60,000-$80,000
(81%), living in Alberta (79%), who are NDP supporters (82%). Those who have
completed some college or university also oppose this practice (74%).
Those most likely to
approve of these types of loans include the least wealthy (22%), earning
$40,000-$60,000 (20%), living in Québec (24%), and those with a post-graduate
degree (17%).
“Offering loans to private,
for-profit companies is risky, given how many people don’t approve of the
practice. It may be good policy, but it isn’t always good politics,” said Dr. Lorne Bozinoff, President of Forum Research.
