Donald Trump Approval Down

More than two-thirds say his affect on Canada-US relations is negative

Toronto, September 21st – In a random sampling of public opinion taken by The Forum Poll™ amongst 1350 Canadian voters, more than seven in ten (72%) say they disapprove of Donald Trump, up seven points since March (March 24th: 65%).

Fewer than two in ten (17%) say they approve of him, which is down five points in the same time period (March 24th: 22%).

Just over one in ten (11%) say they do not know about Donald Trump, statistically tied with previous polls (March 24th: 12%).

Respondents most likely to say that they disapprove of Donald Trump include those aged 45-54 (73%), 55-64 (76%), or 65+ (76%), female (81%), earning $40,000-$60,000 (75%) or $60,000-$80,000 (78%), living in the Atlantic (80%) or Québec (79%), supporting the Liberals (85%), the NDP (87%), or BQ (88%), and with a post-graduate degree (80%).

Respondents most likely to approve of Donald Trump include those aged 35-44 (23%), males (24%), earning $80,000-$100,000 (27%), living in Alberta (26%), supporting the Conservatives (37%), and with some college or university (23%).

Few think Trump positive for Canada-US relations

Seven in ten (BTM2: 70%) say that Donald Trump is having at least a somewhat negative effect on Canada US-relations.

Just over one in ten (TOP2: 11%) say that Donald Trump is having at least a somewhat positive effect on Canada-US relations.

Just over a sixth (19%) say Trump is having a neither positive nor negative effect on Canada-US relations.

Respondents most likely to say that Trump is having a negative effect on Canada-US relations include those aged 35-44 (72%), 45-54 (74%), or 55-64 (72%), females (77%), earning $40,000-$60,000 (77%) or $60,000-$80,000 (76%), living in the Atlantic (81%), supporting the Green Party (85%) or the BQ (82%), with a college/university degree (76%) or a post-graduate degree (74%).

Respondents most likely to say Trump is having a positive effect on Canada-US relations include those aged 34 and younger (14%), 55-64 (11%), or 65+ (14%), supporting the Conservatives (17%), and the least educated (22%). 

“Donald Trump’s approval has dropped, even amongst his core supporters in Canada,” said Dr. Lorne Bozinoff, President of Forum Research. “It seems as though negative media attention of his statements and policies has shifted Canadians’ opinions of Trump further into the negatives, and unless something drastic occurs, that’s unlikely to change much during his presidency.”
