Half of Quebecers Oppose
Transmountain Pipeline
Toronto, July 26th, 2019 – In a
random sampling of public opinion taken by The Forum Poll™ among 977 Quebecers, over half (BTM2: 51%) say
they do not support the expansion of the Transmountain pipeline, with one third
(35%) saying they oppose it strongly.
A third (TOP2: 36%) of Quebecers say they
support the expansion of the Transmountain pipeline, with one-fifth (19%) who
say they somewhat support it.
Respondents most likely to oppose include those
aged 35 to 44 (59%) and 45 to 54 (56%), females (56%), voting QS (80%) in the
Québec provincial election, voting for BQ (77%) in the federal election, earning
$100k-$250k (58%), and who say the environment is the most important issue to
them in the upcoming federal election (76%).
Respondents most likely to support include those
over the age of 55 (42% of those 55 to 64 and 41% of those 65 and over), males
(45%), voting Liberal (47%) in the provincial election, voting Conservative
(52%) in the federal election, living in Québec City (52%), and those who said
the economy is the most important issue to them in the upcoming federal
election (65%).
“Half of Quebecers are opposed to
the Transmountain expansion, with a third opposed strongly,” said Dr. Lorne
Bozinoff, President of Forum Research. “How will this play out for the Liberals
in a province where they desperately need seats? On the one hand they’re
courting green votes in a province where the environment is the top issue, but
on the other they’re driving the Transmountain extension forward.”
