Two
thirds want Canada Pension Plan expanded
Oldest, least wealthy in the prairies most likely to agree
TORONTO July 8th,
2015 - In a
random sampling of public opinion taken by the Forum Poll™ among 1200 Canadian
voters, two thirds agree that Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions and
benefits should be increased (65%). The oldest are especially likely to agree
(55 to 64 - 72%, 65+ - 74%), the least wealthy (less than $20K - 73%, $20K to
$40K - 74%), those in Atlantic Canada (71%) and the prairies (76%), those with
some college or university (75%). Liberals (69%) and New Democrats (67%) are
more likely to agree than Conservatives, but even among these partisans, more
than half agree (57%).
"The perceived need for an
expanded CPP is evident across all demographic groups, and is the majority
opinion even among Conservative voters, whose party has ruled it out. Agreement
is high especially among those about to retire and the least wealthy, as well
as those without kids," said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne
Bozinoff.
