Majority Strongly Dissatisfied With US Election

More than half say Trump will be bad for Canada

In a random sampling of public opinion taken by the Forum Poll™ among 1474 Canadian voters the night after the US election, the majority are “not at all satisfied” with the outcome (53%), and, in total, 7-in-10 are dissatisfied with the result (70%). Strong dissatisfaction is characteristic of the young (64%), females (61%), the wealthy ($80K to $100K - 60%), Atlantic Canada (65%), among Liberals (64%) and New Democrats (69%), mothers of children under 18 (67%), the best educated (post grad - 64%) and those who disagree with President-Elect Donald Trump’s political philosophy (73%).

Majority say Trump will be bad for Canada

The majority of Canadian voters say Donald Trump will be bad for Canada (55%), and just less than one fifth think he will be good for the country (14%). Slightly more think he won’t make a difference (17%) or don’t know (15%). The profile of those who think he will be bad for the country is the same as those who disapprove of the election outcome - young, female, wealthy, mothers, well-educated and Liberals or New Democrats.

Two thirds or more find Trump unfit for presidency

Two thirds or more find Donald Trump “does not have the temperament to be president” (69%), “is not honest or trustworthy” (68%) and, especially, that he “does not have the experience to be president” (71%).

Two thirds disagree with Trump’s political philosophy

Two thirds of Canadian voters disagree with Donald Trump’s political philosophy (68%), and disagreement is common across all groups, but especially strong among females (74%), those in mid income groups ($60K to $80K - 72%), in the Atlantic provinces (72%) and Quebec (75%), Liberals (81%) and New Democrats (83%), Francophones (75%), mothers (78%) and the best educated (post grad - 80%).

Half approve of Clinton, but 4-in-10 do not

While one half of Canadian voters approve of Hillary Clinton (50%), as many as 4-in-10 do not approve (40%). Approval is highest among the oldest (59%), women (59%), the wealthiest ($100K to $250K - (58%), in Quebec (56%), among Liberals (66%), mothers (62%) and the best educated (post grad - 60%). Disapproval is common to the youngest (47%), males (51%), in Alberta (54%) and among Conservatives (67%).

Three quarters disapprove of Trump

Close to three quarters of Canadian voters disapprove of Donald Trump (73%), and just one fifth approve (19%). Approval is common to Gen X (45 to 54 - 24%), males (26%), in Alberta (33%), among Conservatives (45%), the least educated (secondary school or less - 27%), and among those who disapprove of the CETA (32%) and NAFTA (34%) trade deals.

“The Canadian voter profile closely mirrors the American voter in distribution if not magnitude - those who voted for Trump were males, middle aged and less well-educated than those who supported Clinton. In addition, predictably, President-Elect Trump is especially popular among Canadian conservatives and in Alberta. It is interesting to note, however, that Hillary Clinton, while enjoying the approval of half our population, still has high levels of disapproval as well, even in this country. Her support was centred on the oldest and women, and that’s not a big enough coalition to win with” said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne Bozinoff.
