Most Disapprove of
47 Councillors, Most Approve of Cancelling Grey Police Cars
Mayor's and police chief’s approvals remain high
TORONTO November 16th
– In a random sampling of public opinion taken by the Forum Poll™ among 778
Toronto voters, more, 4-in-10, disapprove of city council’s vote to expand the
chamber from 44 wards and councillors to 47 (40%) than the third who approve of
this move (33%). Approval of the larger council is common to the youngest
(44%), males (38%) rather than females (28%), the least wealthy (41%), in the
downtown (38%), among bike commuters (57%) and those who voted for Olivia Chow for
mayor (43%.
Wide majority approve of Chief Saunders’ cancellation of grey
police cars
Six-in-ten Toronto
voters approve of Chief Mark Saunders’ decision to cancel further orders of the
new style dark grey police cars (60%), compared to just less than a quarter who
disapprove (22%). Close to one fifth have no opinion (18%). Disapproval is characteristic
of residents of Etobicoke (29%).
Mayor’s, Chief’s approvals relatively high
Mayor Tory has the
approval of more than two thirds of the city’s voters (68%), consistent with
his score last month (October 25 - 70%). Chief Saunders also enjoys the
approval of two thirds (65%) and this is also comparable, if very slightly
lower, to his rating last month (October 25 - 69%).
“Cancelling the grey
cars was a good and popular decision, informed by public opinion as expressed
in our polling. The move to a larger council was not popular however, and our
polling has always shown a consistent desire for a smaller council,” said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne
Bozinoff.
